Matt Kania - Painter & Printmaker
Matt is a talented artist who is dedicated to plein air painting, studio painting and printmaking. I had designed his old web site several years ago and he needed a responsive site to keep up with the new technology. I used a responsive web site template and then customized to his liking.
Matt is also a talented cartographer. If you need any kind of map drawn, he's your guy.
LOGO for Hudson River Cruises
An update to an older, pixel-based logo was needed. The new logo has a simplified line drawing of the Rip Van Winkle, the company's cruise vessel. With better heirarchy of elements (emphasis on the company name rather than the name of their vessel), the new version is an improvement. If you click the left/right arrows, you'll see the "before" version. The new logo will also reproduce better at small and large sizes.
It is my standard practice to create logos in Adobe Illustrator so that the original is a vector file. Vector files are preferred because they can be enlarged with no loss of resolution.
Mary Pettis is a very talented plein air painter with an amazing portfolio of work. I am honored to have designed her web site and to maintain it as well, making sure it continues to represent her in a professional way. Mary wanted her site to focus on her paintings, and she wanted a special zoom feature to enlarge the artworks in her portfolio to show her brush strokes.
It has been a wonderful collaboration with Mary and Jen, Mary's marketing manager. A CMS (content management system) was added to the text pages so that Jen could make most updates; I usually upload painting images, etc.
Hudson River Greenway Water Trail
This website was Part 1 of a large New York State-funded project to promote the Hudson River Water Trail for paddling (mostly kayaking) on the Hudson River from Manhattan to Whitehall, NY. By far the largest and most complicated project I had worked on to-date, the project involved both design and collaboration with a web site developer who custom coded the site, created a database of kayak launch sites, plus a trip planning feature.
Part 2 of the Water Trail project was the design of four folding maps to aid paddlers in navigating the Hudson. A professional cartographer (Matt Kania) drew each of the four detailed maps which I then placed into the four map layouts along with lots of historical information and photos.
Rock Hill Fire Department
Rock Hill, New York is a small community a few miles from Monticello, New York where I live. Their fire department is very active in the community and needed a web site that would be responsive and more modern. They had heard I designed a web site for the Monticello Fire Department and the Youngsville Fire Department, so they called me to bid on the project. I felt honored to help support our local fire departments whose members put their lives on the line each time they are called to an emergency.
Ironically, my great-grandfather was a fire fighter who lost his life in the line of duty in 1933. So to be able to support this fire station with a new web site was rewarding.
Youngsville Fire Department
I was thrilled to help the Youngsville Fire Department with a new web site, and they are very happy with the way it looks and the overall design and function of the site.
We collaborated on a new responsive web site design and it is one of the nicest looking fire department web sites around.
Scale Model Supplies
Scale Model Supplies is one of the largest hobby stores in the St. Paul/Minneapolis (Minnesota) area. Located in what used to be a basement bowling alley, the store is huge with lots of model trains, planes, cars, and different model kits in stock. This web site was a labor of love because the business is owned by my brother, and previously owned by my late father. My brother graciously left the design of the site up to me (wow, that doesn't happen very often!).
The site provides a clean, modern image of their established business on the internet and has driven a good amount of local and regional traffic to the store. At some point, they may sell items online, but the sheer size of their inventory makes that impractical right now.
Rudys 1 of a Kind Vacation Rentals
Rudy Younger is an entrepreneur and property manager extraordinaire who needed a simple, modern website to promote his properties and his consulting abilities. We collaborated on a new responsive web site design that is eye-catching and effective.
Ronit and Moti Peleg are gifted people who hold unique relationship enhancing workshops all over the world. Their business, Ego2Heart, was begun in upstate New York and continues today from Israel. I designed their logo and a modern web site that would promote both their workshops and their story as a couple, which is quite amazing. They have even appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show to talk about their journey and how they met.
We collaborated on a new responsive web site design for Ego2Heart, and visitors can enroll in the relationship workshops through the web site with payments accepted through PayPal.
Sculpture in the South
Sculpture in the South is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the appreciation of sculpture through education and to create an accessible public sculpture collection that enhances the Summerville (South Carolina) community. I have been privileged to work with this organization from their most humble beginnings. The organization is now firmly established in the community and has managed to add more than 20 bronze sculptures within the town of Summerville.
Their current web site was a collaboration with the director of the organization. The site is eye-catching and informative, and promotes the organization and encourages visitors to explore the public sculpture collection.
Dermatology Associates at Crystal Run
Dermatology Associates at Crystal Run is an established dermatology practice in Middletown, New York with a second office in Port Jervis, New York. Their web site was designed and built before responsive web sites were common, and so this site will likely be updated at some point in the near future.
Monticello Fire Deoartment
The Monticello NY Fire Department is my local fire department and I approached them about redesigning their web site several years ago. I was proud to offer my services to such a worthwhile organization. Since that time, responsive web sites have become the 'norm' and this site will have to be updated soon.
We had collaborated on the current web site design to make it colorful and full of useful information for the community.
Thalmann's Service Center
Thalmann's Service Center is an auto repair business located in Liberty, New York. Danny Thalmann is the owner, and he knows his stuff. As usual, when I see a quality business without a presence on the internet, I am compelled to offer to help. I can't say for sure whether his business has grown as a direct result of having a web site, but I'm positive it's easier for people to FIND his business now. In addition to his web site, I photographed, printed and framed four black & white "art" photos to enhance the walls of his waiting room.
Since the creation of the web site, responsive web sites have become the 'norm' and so this site will have to be updated soon.
Garden Elegance Landscaping Services LOGO
I met a young woman in Charleston, SC who had started her own landscaping business and hired her to do some work in our yard. Her company was called Garden Elegance. I was so impressed by this young woman who worked right along with her crew, that I offered to design her logo and business cards. She described the kind of identity she wanted for her business and we collaborated on a logo, then business cards. She was very happy with the results.
Red Fern Jewelry LOGO
Red Fern Jewelry was a start-up business by a good friend of mine, Kim Stockell. She made beautiful hand-made jewelry and wanted a logo that would look professional and elegant. I loved designing this logo; it still looks current even 10 years later.
I also designed a web site and business card for Kim. I was very proud of how beautiful everything turned out, and she was pleased, too.
Bistro Lilly LOGO
Bistro Lilly was a small, elegant restaurant in Goshen, NY owned by a client who also owned the Goshen Gourmet deli and restaurant. Bistro Lilly was in business for a couple of years and during that time, it was quite popular. The food was excellent.
Unfortunately, the 2008 recession took a toll on area restaurants and Bistro Lily closed.
About Laurie Lawrence –
design is second nature...
Some designers call it a curse to notice design everywhere, but I think it's a continual source of inspiration – and any serious designer looks for inspiration. I love design that delights me – or makes me smile. Sometimes, the way positive and negative space interact can thrill my soul. I became aware of my God-given ability in the first grade when I decided to burnish blue crayon shavings (to mimic waves) on my drawing of an ocean liner. Mrs. Carter gave me an A+ and a smiley face :-)
I started my design business in 1999 with a leap of faith. In preparation for my eventual life as a designer, I was a typesetter, art department manager, production manager, print buyer, public relations & marketing manager, and art director at a publication company and at several ad agencies. While working full-time, I attended the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis), Valencia College (Orlando), University of Central Florida (Orlando) and the University of Minnesota (Duluth). I completed my Associates Degree from Valencia College (Orlando), and am just a few credits shy of a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Minnesota (Duluth).
